What Worked: Fluency and Goals AND a Birthday Giveaway!

Happy first day of June! And a very happy birthday to my buddy, Celeste over at The Education Highway! <3 There's a birthday giveaway going on over at her blog (I have it linked at the bottom of this post as well), so check it out and good luck!

It's Wednesday, so you know what that means!! What Worked! What Worked is a blogging series intended for reflection on this past year. I changed grade levels this year and had to make a lot of changes to my instruction to reach a different age group. This series is all about "what worked" in my classroom this year. Here's the schedule: (bloggers, feel free to link up your own reflections at the bottom of the post).

This week is all about Fluency and Goals. Second grade is a BIG year for reading fluency and because it was the first time I taught it, I needed to figure out a way to make it successful. If you do not concern yourself so much with fluency, this post is still beneficial to take a look at as it also discusses student-centered goal setting which can be used in any subject for any child.

Let's begin with Reading Fluency!

My district sets a words per minute (wpm) goal for each 9 weeks for Second Grade. The benefit of that is that students understand that once they hit that number, they've hit their goal. In order for it to be easy for the students to track themselves and to see easily every day was to make some sort of visual tracker. This was something that the other Second Grade teachers were on board with and we all made something visual for the kids to be able to monitor their own progress.

I made a "Fluency Flower."

Each student had a laminated bumblebee (clipart courtesy of Creative Clips, of course). By laminating them, they became dry erase. I did not put student names on the bumblebees. Students were in charge of knowing which number was their's. I felt like having names on them would broadcast the names of students to each other that were not making their goals. The way it worked was the wpm goal was in the center of the flower like a target. After fluency checks, we would update their bumblebee's number. If it exceeded the number in the middle of the flower, their bumblebee could be moved to the petals. If not, we kept the bumblebee off the flower but certainly noted that we got a lot closer.

WHAT WORKED:
1) The visual target was in an easy to see spot in the classroom and students were very excited to work on their fluency goals to get their bee on the flower!
2) It helped with number sense, which was a surprising benefit. Students could easily see that if they got 70 wpm on an 80 wpm goal that they only needed 10 more words per minute. 10 more words per minute sounds a LOT better than saying, I need to get to 80.
3) Students did not feel ashamed or embarrassed about their fluency. Because there were no names on the bumblebees, students were internalizing their goal and keeping it with them to work on, which became far more engaging and inspiring to work on than impressing their friends.
4) I just used looped Scotch tape on each bumblebee and they lasted all year long! Any time a student needed to be moved, we just peeled him off the wall and plopped him on the flower!

Any time you have to track something, it always raises the question of how to organize the data. Organization has never been a strength of mine, but the little system I came up with WORKED wonders throughout the entire year. I snagged some of these number tabs from an office supply store and each student's fluency checks were in there (more on where I got the fluency checks from next).

WHAT WORKED:
1) It was all in one place (huge for me or I will lose it...)
2) The students knew their number and when they came up to my table to check their fluency, they knew where to tell me to go. Teamwork makes the dream work, people!
3) I kept these right with their goal folders (more on that later) and it made everything so easy to access.

There are many places to get fluency passages. TpT is a great resources as is Readworks.org. However, the reading curriculum (Reading Wonders) that is used by my district, has a fluency passage each week that goes along with the content we are reading about each week. The way I scheduled this is as follows. We had a "Fluency Check" once at the beginning of each month and once at the end with the same passage. I always chose the last week's passage because they got a little tougher as they went on and the students loved the challenge. The other passages I would send home as homework to track fluency each week. I also had an extra in a plastic sleeve in the Reading center that students could practice with a friend. I changed it out every week and kept the "Fluency Check" passages up with me.

WHAT WORKED:
1) These were free and already provided to me for the entire year. If you do not have a reading curriculum that offers these passages, check out Readworks.org.
2) They were predictable. Students knew that the last week's passage goes to me (so that they don't memorize them when they practice) and each week they would get a new one to practice with.

Okay, let's talk about goal setting. I made an amazing purchase on TpT this past year on goal setting and it totally changed how my students worked to achieve them.

It was created by What I Have Learned. I set it up a bit differently than she has it in her product and these were not sent home. I did a mini-lesson on goal setting and put it into practice as students worked at their own pace on their chosen goal. Each page to print in her product is for a different standard, but she has editable pages as well. Because of the way I structured it in my classroom, I simply printed out a blank goal sheet and we wrote in what each child wanted to work on. It was important to me that students choose their goals with guidance from me. I learned that students are more likely to achieve a goal they want to achieve than if I were to assign a goal to them.

Because our one on one meetings needed to be short and because I wanted students to focus more on what the goal was and the things they could do to reach it, I did the writing. This particular student really wanted to read his first chapter book. A friend told him about the book but he was a little scared to read it because it was harder than anything he'd read before, even though it was on his reading level. We discussed why this was important to him, what he could do to help him, and we came up with a measurable outcome. That is very important to remember. Students will say "I want to get better at _____," but without a way to measure it, students won't know if they have gotten better or not. This specific measurable outcome was a score on an AR test for the book he wanted to read.

WHAT WORKED:
1) The arrow in the product page was very easy to see and understand.
2) Each blank allowed us to analyze why we wanted a goal and what the specifics of the goal were. There was no confusion!
3) This product page was completely editable and I was able to customize the bottom part to fit my class.

If you look at the bottom of the page above, you can see that there's a date area for "Next goal check." I did not get a picture of this because I ran out of pages for it! I had one of those giant desk calendars on my table where we did goal checks. After we met a goal, the students set another one and signed up for a date on the calendar. This took a lot of practice and guidance. Some students wanted to meet their goal in just and day and others didn't want to see me for another 2 months! So the guideline was that even if they didn't meet their goal, we needed to meet and talk about it at least every 2 weeks so that they don't forget what to do!

WHAT WORKED:
1) It kept me on a schedule. The kids were picking dates to come see me during centers and I knew ahead of time which folders to pull and get ready.
2) Students were able to keep track of how much time they had to try to achieve their goal. I usually had kids during centers and in the morning when they came in to class go to the calendar and check what day it was.
3) Kids loved using the colored pens to write their names in. It's the little things, sometimes.

I was SO pleased with the way this system worked for my class this year. My students became far more driven to achieve these goals that they set on their own than they were before I introduced it. Fluency scores spiked by the end of the year (a LOT of students put fluency as their goal for their folders and it helped tremendously). They REALLY wanted their bumblebee on that flower!!

Dare to Dream

As fun as last week's TpT Seller Challenge was (makeover madness!!), this week's is very reflective and thought-provoking. This week's challenge is to blog about my dreams for my TpT store and my blog and internet presence. I have been so inspired reading about other teachers' goals and dreams and am so overwhelmed with how amazing this community is.

So without much further ado, here are my dreams for my TpT store and my blog.

1. Buy a home:
My husband and I are incredibly fortunate. We are currently living in my mother-in-law's home almost completely without cost. She was given an amazing job opportunity to travel with her company but was not quite ready to sell her home. My husband and I at that time were living with my mother and stepfather when my mother-in-law approached us and offered her home to us while she traveled. At the time, I was in my final internship and my husband had just lost his job. It could not have come at a better time. Ryan and I have been smart about this though. We have taken this opportunity to save and pay off tons of bills. I just finished teaching my first year of kindergarten and I have never earned that much money in my life, which is pretty sad if you think about it. Teachers don't make a lot of money... but it was more than I have ever lived on and my husband and I were able to pay off a lot of debt in this past year. Once we are debt free (which won't take long now, thank goodness), the plan is to buy our OWN home. As lovely and incredibly amazing it has been to live for practically nothing in a home that feels like ours... we can't live off our parents forever and we want to do this for us and our future family. Having the income from TpT is helping us get there little by little and my dream is to have my TpT store provide something fairly solid to work with when the time comes to make a huge buying decision. In the mean time, I sometimes have to pinch myself that we are as fortunate as we are to live here and save, save, save.

2. Start a family:
Ryan and I have always wanted children. We have been married for just under two years and are starting to have serious talks about starting a family. We may wait till we own the home I spoke about in item 1, or we might not. Sometimes, things in life are not easily planned. So at this point, we aren't necessarily trying to have children, but we aren't avoiding it either. I would love to be able to take time off from work to have a family. Ideally, I would be able to work from home. My husband works from home now. How amazing would it be for us both to be able to? The crazy things is... it's totally possible. If I work hard now and build my TpT store and other online presence, it's fathomable. It may be a long ways off. It may not even pan out, but there's no reason not to try to reach this goal. Either way, I'm going to have a family. I'm approaching 28 years old and my husband will be 30 this year (yikes!). We ain't gettin' any younger! ;)

3. Inspire others:
Here's a little back story - I used to work at Best Buy. It was a great place for me and I met a ton of people that I am still friends with today. One such friend also became a teacher around the same time I did, except she teaches middle school math (glad someone can... that stuff is no joke...). We were talking on Facebook about the Smart Notebook software and how excited I am to have my first smart board next year. As we were talking, I discovered that she makes a lot of her own activities and that they were good! Long story short, I was able to inspire her to upload her first free product and begin her journey on TpT. (Her brand spankin' new store is right here by the way: Algebra Addict. If you know any middle grade teachers, download her freebie and leave some love!)
The experience left me feeling incredibly motivated and as I thought about it, I always feel that way after inspiring someone to do something exciting. By creating products, helpful blog posts, and relationships with my customers and readers, I am inspiring them to be better educators. I owe my own motivation to a lot of blogs I started reading as a college student. These bloggers, whether they knew it or not, inspired me to be better. They inspired me to be a better teacher before I even was a teacher! And now they've inspired me to create resources and support others. What a domino effect! I hope that my blog and TpT store reaches more and more teachers (and ultimately students!) everyday and my big dream here is continue to grow and touch lives.

4. Not feel held back:
After that really inspirational section of this post, selfishly, I want my TpT store and blog to help me feel like I'm not held back. I have worked many years in jobs that I hated for almost nothing. For years I questioned my own ambitions and felt like I couldn't do anything. In just 18 months of being on TpT, I feel like I can do anything! The past 2 years have brought a LOT of change and opportunity my way and I want to make sure I'm not letting it slip by me:

Ryan and I were married.
I quit my job and finished school.
We lived with my parents.
Ryan lost his job.
Ryan began streaming video games and has developed his own stay at home job (yes, he seriously plays video games from home and earns money...).
I began my blog and TpT store. Why not, right? If Ryan can do it... why can't I?
We both graduated college.
We moved into a house. With rooms. Like more than one room we can put our stuff in.
I taught my first year ever. And didn't completely suck at it! ;)

I want to make sure that these opportunities only have me moving forward... and I think they will, as long as I work hard and pursue these big dreams of mine. (Totally a side note though: my big dreams are completely realistic and reasonable I think!).

Thank you so much for reading my lengthy post. I have loved reading the other posts. Click this link (HERE) to go to a link-up where you can read other posts about big dreams all of us teacher folk have. ;)

Playing Catch-Up with the Link-Up!

How is it that the summer is sneaking past me?! Last week was a whirl! I returned from a much needed (but too short) cruise and then went it head first to the theater for summer auditions and the beginning of summer camp season.

I have a little catching up to do on a fun summer link-up hosted by I Heart Grade 3! Each week teacher bloggers from all over will be linking up their posts about a specific topic.

Check out my post HERE for the first topic: Summer Goals!

The next couple of topics are in this single post. Let's go!

Why I Started Blogging:

I am an avid writer. I have kept a journal since the 6th grade and write in them constantly! I decided that I wanted to start a blog and did, but never found the right niche for it. I did a lot of book reviews. Then I did some recipes. Then I did some fitness related stuff. None of it really inspired me to continue blogging and it just kind of died out! Fast forward a couple of years, I was in my final internship/student teaching in college and discovered the amazing world of teacher bloggers! I was finding freebies and lesson plan ideas and all these wonderful things to incorporate into my internship and future classroom. I decided I would start a blog when I became a teacher to join in on all the fun. I told my husband about it and he said, "Why wait?" So, I jumped in and have never looked back! I love to try things I find on Pinterest, discuss hot topics with other teachers, support other teachers (bloggers and non-bloggers) and offer resources. I also love to just write write write!

It is no secret now, but if you are stopping by for the first time (welcome!), my blog is named after my dog, Daisy! My name is actually Amanda, but I get called Daisy all the time. No biggie! But the real Daisy is my little baby chihuahua! Well, not really a baby anymore... but... she's the inspiration for my blog and store name and brand!

Here she is... so stinkin' cute...

Next up: An accomplishment I'm proud of! Truthfully, there are several things I've accomplished in life that I'm proud of. I followed a dream to become an actress and left my home town to pursue it, but was gravely disappointed. Following that dream broke me, but over time and with the help of people who love me, I was able to pick myself up. I learned so much about myself during those years, including my passion for teaching. Now I am certainly thankful for those hard years, but I definitely do not think back at them fondly.

I know this does not sound like much, but I think the accomplishment I'm most proud of myself for is getting myself where I am now. I live a pretty simple life all things considered and compared to where I was just a short 7 years ago, it is an accomplishment! I live in a house now (not the small apartment with 4 roommates I was used to) with the man of my dreams and my two fur-babies. I was able to go to college completely paid for by my employer (Best Buy) at the time. I overcame heartbreak and addiction. I am almost completely debt free at age 27. Although it took me a long time to accept the fact that my childhood dreams and plans for my adulthood did not pan out, I could not be happier with where this journey has led me. And I have been very lucky to combine both of my passions: theater and education; by teaching at a community theater.

Thanks for sticking around and reading about me! I will be linking up again tomorrow ON SCHEDULE this time about "My Teaching Quirks." What are your teaching quirks? Link up with I Heart Grade 3!

Summer Link-Up: Goals!

Here I am! Don't fret! I haven't disappeared off the face of a planet as it may seem with the lack of blogging I've been doing. I have to fill you in that at the theater I work for, we just had our first wave of auditions for the highly sought after spots in the summer shows.... I'm POOPED. This long weekend is just what I needed after a week of 14 hour days...

So here I am! Blogging again! And I found a really fun link-up over at I Heart Grade 3!

It's her first link-up as host, so make sure you head over to her blog and check it out! It is going to be a lot of fun. Every Monday throughout the summer, teachers like yourself will be posting about different topics. Although next Monday is the last Monday of school for me, I'm going to go ahead and start... my mind is totally already on summer anyway...

Today's topic is my goals for the summer! I always give myself too many... but here are a few!

1) Some Professional Development:
I have two books on my to-read list. I want to re-read The Daily 5 and implement it for the first time in my new second grade classroom next year. I also would like to read Teach Like A Pirate for the first time. The Daily 5 is priority, so if I don't make it to Teach Like A Pirate until the start of school, no biggie! I also signed up for a few trainings in my county. I'll be getting a Smart Board for the first time next year, so I gotta learn how to use it!!

2) Update! Create!
I need to update some of my products in my store and create some new ones to reflect my new grade level of second grade! I have so many ideas written down... In fact, my husband got me this little journal a while back (I'm an avid journaler... if that's even a word...) and I decided to use this one for my ideas. Can't wait to have time to work on them!

3) Get Organized!
This school year was interesting for me: I was a first year Kindergarten teacher in a portable with no storage and we moved into a new home. I'm feeling VERY disorganized... However, next year I will be in a classroom with more storage than I can fathom (seriously... I will totally post pictures in August) and I need to get organized. My Pinterest is overflowing with ideas I want to try, so organizing myself for next year is one of my biggest summer goals! My house is still not very organized either. Well, it is... but not very efficiently organized. I've got my work cut out for me. My school has had me start packing boxes to move, even though I still have students in my room for another 7 days. I went in yesterday over the weekend to start packing. My students are going to freak out!

I'm going to miss that little sail in my reading corner, although my Adventure sign is a little wompy these days...

4) Not really a goal per say... but I need to R&R...
I will be spending my free time reading, coloring/drawing/doodling, journaling, and playing some much missed video games....

What are your summer goals? Comment below to share with me, or if you have your own blog, write up a post and link up with I Heart Grade 3! Here's the summer line-up on topics we'll be sharing!

Thanks for stopping by!
